The Canadian Construction Association estimates a shortage of 85,500 workers over the next decade, yet immigrants with construction skills represented just 2.4% of new arrivals – down from 9.6% in the 1980s. As the Carney administration pursues plans to build 500,000 homes annually, the question for Canadians isn’t whether we need immigrant construction workers, but whether we can afford to turn them away.
